An image of what is almost assuredly the 2023 Honda Civic Type R leaked online Wednesday. First spotted by the sleuths over at civic11forum.com, it’s our first real look at the new Type R undisguised, way before we’re supposed to see it.
A forum user called Palmer8 spotted this photo buried in one of Honda’s Japanese sites alongside a handful of other Civic models. It’s a fairly clear front quarter shot of the car painted in white, and it’s exactly what we expected the car to look like. There’s a more aggressive bumper and a vent in the hood for cooling, and we can see upgraded side skirts and a sweet all-black wing piece out back. There’s also bigger brakes and wide tires, just like on the camouflaged prototypes we’ve seen in the past.
Though we don’t have a great view of the interior, it’s easy to spot the all-red seats synonymous with Type R vehicles. We expect the rest of the interior to borrow from the standard Civic hatchback.
Honda’s been mum on powertrain details, but we expect an evolution of the turbo inline-four, manual, front-wheel-drive layout from the outgoing car, albeit with slightly more power.
Honda released its first teaser of the finished product on Tuesday, with plans to fully reveal the car on July 20—just one week away. We’ll find out everything we want to know then.
